Raaj Kumar

BIOGRAPHY :

Raaj Kumar (Born Kulbushan Pandit, October 8, 1926 – July 3, 1996) was an Indian actor in Bollywood movies. Raaj Kumar started out as sub-inspector of Mumbai police in the late 1940s before he turned to acting with the unnoticed 1952 film "Rangili". He shot to fame with the Oscar-nominated "Mother India" in 1957 and went onto star in over 70 Bollywood films in a career that spanned nearly four decades. He was known for his special style of dialogue delivery and for having a gravelly voice.

He was born as Kulbushan Pandit in Balochistan which is now a province of Pakistan. He moved to Mumbai in the late 1940s and was a sub-inspector of the Mumbai police. He married Gayatri in the 1960s with whom he had three children, a son named Puru Raajkumar who is also an actor in the Bollywood industry and a daughter named Vastavikta who is also set to debut in films and Panini, who has not shown any move towards films as of now.

In the early 1950s, now known as Raaj Kumar he quit his job as a police inspector and turned to acting. He made his acting debut in "Rangili" (1952) which was unnoticed. After acting in a few more films in the next five years which failed to launch his career, his shot to fame in Mehboob Khan's classic Oscar-nominated blockbuster film "Mother India"(1957). His performance as a poor farmer who loses his arms in an accident and then abandons his wife and children was appreciated and he went onto play many leading and supporting roles throughout the 1960s and 1970s where his special style of dialogue delivery made him an icon in the industry.

Apart from his unique style of dialogue delivery which became his trademark, he was known for his show or scene stealing abilities even when he was not in the leading role. One of his most famous catchphrases was "Jaani" which he frequently used in many of his films and also addressed people with the same word.

His most notable performances were in hit films like "Paigham" (1959), "Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi" (1960), "Gharana" (1961), "Dil Ek Mandir" (1963), "Waqt" (1965), "Neel Kamal" (1968), "Pakeezah" (1971), "Lal Patthar" (1971) and "Hindustan Ki Kasam" (1973). He picked up Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Awards for "Dil Ek Mandir" where he played a man dying of cancer and "Waqt" where he played one of three rich aristocrats.

Towards the late 1970s and 1980s Raaj Kumar appeared in lesser films and often played central supporting or villain roles such as the father, uncle, friend, an elderly mobster. His most notable films during this period included "Kudrat" (1981), "Ek Nai Paheli" (1984), "Marte Dam Tak" (1987) and "Jung Baaz" (1989).

In 1991 he appeared alongside legendary actor Dilip Kumar in "Saudagar". The film was a huge success due to the hype of seeing both actors onscreen for the first time in 3 decades. Raaj and Dilip Kumar had previously appeared together playing brothers in "Paigham" (1959).

Due to his many years of smoking, Raaj Kumar started suffering from a throat disease in the early 1990s which reduced his signature trademack voice to a whisper and caused his health to decline. His last film appearance was in "God and Gun" (1995) before his death at the age of 69 in July 1996. His death came only a few months before his son Puru Raajkumar was due to make his debut in "Bal Brahmachari" which released later that year. It was dedicated to his memory.

Dilip Kumar

BIOGRAPHY :

The film is set in post-independence India where Industrialization is slowly creeping in. The movie is based on Tangawallahs who earn their living transporting people from place to place on Tangas(horse - carts).

Shankar is a Tangawalla. He lives in a remote village in rural India with his mother and sister, Manju. Shanker and Krishna are very good friends. But things take a bad turn when both of them fall in love with the same girl- Rajani .Krishna suspects Shankar to use unfair means in winning the heart of Rajni and as a result their friendship suffers.

The main employer in the region is a kind-hearted businessman Maganlal. When Maganlal announces that he would like to undertake a religious pilgrimage, his son, Kundan, takes over the business . But Kundan was not like his father. The livelihood of the poor Tangawallas is threatened when the Kundan begins operating a bus service in the town, which he subsidizes heavily with the sole intention of first driving the Tangawallahs out of the down and then making profits.

This angers the community and they ask Kundan to reconsider, but he refuses. Kundan proposes a competition to decide which service was the best - The Bus or the Tanga. He suggests that there should be a race between both the vehicles. If the Bus wins the race, the Tangawallahs would not complain further and if the Tanga wins, the Bus service would stop.

Nobody could even dream that a horse cart could beat a machine operated bus. Shanker, however, accepts the challenge to everybody's surprise. His logic is that they would anyway be driven to starvation if the Bus Service continues. This race at least gives them an opportunity to try and do something.

However, the rest of the Tangawallahs do not agree with Shankar.Everyone blame Shankar for his foolishness. Shankar is left alone with nobody's support except his sweetheart, Rajni. As the movie unravels,a hopeless situation begins to turn around because of the way the people come together. Problems occur one after another but nothing can deter the determined Shankar from his firm determination.

Watch the action unfold as Shankar unites a divided village, and how he sets about to keep his faith in winning this race between man and machine.

His family first settled in Amritsar, then moved to Ludhiana. He married in the Geetanjali late 1960s and his first son Rahul Khanna was born in 1972. His second son Akshaye Khanna was born in 1975. Unfortunately, his marriage ended in a divorce. In 1990, he again tied the knot with Kavita Daftry and was blessed with two children – son Sakshi and daughter Shraddha.

Later, while he was pursuing his commerce studies at a college in Mumbai, the legendary Sunil Dutt offered him a role in his forthcoming "Man Ka Meet". His decision to do a film invited the wrath of his father, who threatened to throw him out of the house, if he dared to enter the tinsel town. But destiny willed otherwise and he went to act in the film. The film was a success and his family too reconciled with the choice of his profession.

Vinod Khanna debuted in Sunil Dutt's 1968 film "Man Ka Meet" as a villain. The rave reviews of his first film fetched him fifteen different roles with in a week’s time. He acted in multi-starrer films often playing supporting and negative roles notably playing a dacoit in the 1971 hit "Mera Gaon Mera Desh" and "Reshma Aur Shera".

His big break was in the 1971 film "Mere Apne" directed by Gulzar. In Mere Apne he had the opportunity of working with the debutant director Gulzar—an experience, he remembers to this day. Negative roles could not contain satisfy his talent for long. Vinod Khanna’s skills and charismatic personality soon fetched him the roles of a hero.

His sensitive performance as an army officer facing death row in another Gulzar scripted and directed 1973 film "Achanak" was critically acclaimed. The songless film echoed the true life story of K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra and Khanna portrayed Kawas Nanavati, the real life Navy officer.

He went on to star in many hits throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. His performance in films like "Parvarish" (1977), "Amar Akbar Anthony"(1977), "Muqaddar Ka Sikander" (1978), "The Burning Train"(1980) and "Qurbani" (1980) brought him in league of the likes of Amitabh, Shashi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna.

The rise of Vinod Khanna in the filmdom went on steadily through the seventies. But when he was soaring high in his profession, Vinod Khanna developed spiritual inclinations.During his spiritual quest, his coming into contact with Osho the divine master abruptly interrupted his celluloid romance. He renounced the world and went to stay in the Osho’s ashram and left the film industry in 1979 for eight years. At this time, he was the most successful actor in the Bollywood, competing with Amitabh Bachchan.
There he did all kinds of jobs from fitter, electrician, and gardener to manual labourer to eke out a living. He stayed in the Oregon headquarters of the Osho’s commune for a couple of years. After a few years, he came back from Rajneeshpuram (US)—disillusioned and distressed, to pick up the lost threads of his profession.

He rejoined the industry, eight years later in mid 1980s.His come back film "Insaaf" was a runaway success and he was flooded with offers from people like JP Dutta, Yash Chopra and Mukul Anand. Soon he churned out a large number of films like "Batwara", "Kshatriya", "Suryaa", "C.I.D.","Rihaee","Pathar Ke Insaan","Parampara","Mahasangram", "Khoon Ka Karz","Dayavan", and "Police Aur Mujrim" and many others. But the film critics were unanimous on the fact that the best part of Vinod Khanna was far over.

Vinod Khanna had the good fortune of acting with female stars of three generations like Saira Bano, Mumtaz, Yogita Bali, Rekha, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Neetu Singh, Meenakhsi Sheshadri, Poonam Dhillon, Karishma Kapoor and Amisha Patel and host of others in a career spanning over thirty years. He has a penchant for owning best cars in the world and has driven around in BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Cadillac—to name a few.

In 1999, Vinod Khanna, a veteran of over hundred films was given the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the Indian cinema.

In 1997 he introduced his son Akshaye in the film "Himalay Putra" which he produced and also starred in. In 1999 he received a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. He has since acted in fewer films playing character roles. His most recent films were "Deewaanapan" (2002) and "Risk" (2007).

In 1997, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was nominated from Gurdaspur, East Punjab in the next year's Lok Sabha poll.

The star-factor helped him oust five time Lok Sabha member Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder. Bhinder's perceived inability to develop the area outweighed the "outsider" tag applied to Khanna. The latter became union minister for culture and tourism in July 2002. Six months later he was moved to the more important ministry of external affairs (MEA) as minister of state. In 2004 he won re-election from Gurdaspur.

Amitabh Bachchan

BIOGRAPHY :

Amitabh Bachchan born October 11, 1942 is a renowned Indian film actor, popular mostly in the Indian sub-continent and the Middle-East. Bachchan's acting career began in 1969, reaching heights in the mid 70-80s. After withdrawing from acting career, Bachchan returned in 2000 as the host of the television show Kaun Bangea Crorepati? on Star Plus. He is presently active in the Indian film industry.

Bachchan was also a member of Indian Parliament (MP), being elected in 1984 from Allahabad. His political career was short lived as he resigned from this post after only 3 years.
Bachchan was born in the city of Allahabad, India. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known poet of Urdu and Hindi. The original last name of the family is "Srivastava"; "Bachchan" was in fact a pen name used by his father. However, when Bachchan entered films he did so under his father's pen name. Now he is never known as anything but Amitabh Bachchan. His immediate family has also adopted the Bachchan surname. His mother is Teji Bachchan.
Bachchan attended Allahabad's Boys' High School, followed by Nainital's Sherwood College, where he gained a degree in art. He later went on to study at Kirori Mal College in Delhi University earning a degree in science. When he was in his twenties, Bachchan gave up a job as freight broker for the shipping firm, Bird and Co., based in Kolkata, to pursue a career in acting.
He is married to actress Jaya Bhaduri (now Bachchan). The couple have two children: daughter Shweta and son Abhishek. Abhishek Bachchan has also entered the Bollywood film industry.
Bachchan is said to have met Jaya Bhaduri at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) at Pune, though there is no evidence to confirm that he was ever enrolled there as a student.
In 1984, Bachchan briefly entered politics in support of long-time family friend Rajiv Gandhi. He contested Allahabad's Parliament seat against H. N. Bahuguna, a well-known politician, and won by a large margin (68.2% of the vote). His political career, however, was short-lived: he resigned after only three years, not finishing his term. At the time of his resignation, it was rumoured that he might have been involved in the Bofors Scandal. Bachchan was not implicated in the case, and has since distanced himself from the Gandhi family. He denies that the two events were connected, commenting that he "should have never got into politics".
He has two grandchildren: Navya Naveli and Agastya Nanda.
In November 2005, Bachchan was admitted to India's Lilavati Hospital, in order to undergo surgery on his intestine. The procedure came after Bachchan complained of pain in his abdomen, and the issue is said to have been related to a 1983 injury. After the operation, Bachchan took several months off from work, unable to leave his home even to shoot the sequel to his recently-launched television program, Kaun Banega Crorepati 2. By April 2006 Bachchan had resumed shooting for most of his projects.
