BIOGRAPHY :

Govind Arun Ahuja (born December 21, 1963 in Virar, Maharashtra India), popularly known as Govinda, is an actor in Hindi films. Starting with his debut in 1986, he has acted in over 120 Hindi films. In 2004, he joined politics, winning a parliamentary seat from Mumbai (formerly "Bombay").

Govinda was born to former actor Arun Ahuja and singer Nirmala Arun Ahuja on December 21, 1963. He studied at Annasaheb Vartak College in Vasai, Maharashtra. His elder brother Kirti Kumar is an actor and director who appeared in some of Govinda's films playing supporting roles and has directed his brother in some films most notably "Hatya" (1988). Govinda's nephew Vinay Anand is also an actor.

Govinda initially wanted to marry actress Neelam with whom he had made many films but eventually gave up and married according to his mother's choice. He married Sunita Govind Ahuja on 11 March 1987 and has two children with her. Govinda has acted in over 100 films since his debut in 1986. He has been one of the most successful comedy actors in Bollywood particularly during the 1990s. After a brief stint in politics in 2003 he is attempting to make a comeback in Bollywood since 2006.

Govinda made his film debut in the 1986 film "Ilzaam" which was a success and launched his career. He acted in a string of movies after that with mixed success. Most of the films he appeared in during the 1980s were in the action, romance or family drama genres. He was often paired opposite actress Neelam and together they appeared in hit films such as "Love 86" (1986), "Khudgarz" (1987) and his brother Kirti Kumar's directed "Hatya" (1988).

He had success with family drama films such as "Dariya Dil" (1988), "Jaise Karni Waise Bharni" (1989) and "Hum" (1991) as well as action films such as "Marte Dam Tak" (1987) and " Jung Baaz"(1989).

He worked with David Dhawan for the first time in the 1989 action film "Taaqatwar".
He then acted in 17 movies directed by David Dhawan most of which were comedy films. The most successful films during their collaboration included "Shola Aur Shabnam" (1992), "Aankhen" (1993), "Raja Babu" (1994), "Coolie No. 1" (1995), "Saajan Chale Sasural" (1996), "Hero No. 1" (1997), "Deewana Mastana" (1997), "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" (1998), "Haseena Maan Jaayegi" (1999) and "Jodi No. 1" (2001). Dhawan and other directors frequently cast him opposite actresses such as Karishma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon during the 1990s.

Govinda played the role of a villain for the first time in his career in "Shikari" (2000). Although the movie was not a commercial success, Govinda's convincing portrayal of a sociopath murderer was critically acclaimed.

His box office draw suffered a setback in the early 2000s following a series of commercially unsuccessful films. His acting career was further affected when he contested and won the seat for Member of Parliament from Mumbai North in the 2004 parliamentary elections. He did not have any new film releases in 2004 and 2005 although some of his delayed films such as "Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karen" (2005) and his own home production "Ssukh" (2005) were released but were box office disasters.

n 2004, Govinda joined the Congress party, and was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower House of Parliament from Mumbai with a thumping majority of beating the 5 time sitting MP by over 50000 votes.

In a run up to the polls, Govinda had announced that his agenda will be awaas (housing), prawaas (transportation), swasthya (health) and gyaan (education).

During the first ten months of his tenure as an Member of Parliament (MP), Govinda did not spend any money from his MP Local Area Development Fund of Rs. 20 million. He started utilizing his fund only when newspaper reports brought this to notice. According to the Thane district collectorate sources, Govinda committed Rs 7 to construct anganwadi, samaj mandirs and resolve drinking water problem of Vasai and Virar residents. However, work on these projects did not begin (as of August 2005), because administrative approval was being awaited. Govinda also took credit for 80% of the quadrupling of Borivli-Virar section on Western Railway (India).

During his tenure as an MP, Govinda embarrassed his party, Congress, by coming out in open to support actor Shakti Kapoor, who had been caught in an sting operation, asking for sexual favours from a television reporter posing as a Bollywood aspirant. He also opposed the ban on dance bars, which embarrassed the Congress-NCP led Democratic Front Government, which had proposed the ban.

As an MP, Govinda has been criticized for being inaccessible to the people of his constituency, especially during the terrible rains (beginning July 26, 2005) that left around 450 dead in Mumbai. After the rains, while speaking to a TV channel, Govinda claimed that he had got Rs 150 million sanctioned for his flood-hit constituency after speaking to Sonia Gandhi. However, his own party colleagues contested the claim. Mohan Adhikari, the president of Palghar Congress Unit went on record saying that "not a single paisa" had been received.

Govinda made a comeback to films in late 2006 with the comedy film "Bhagam Bhag" alongside Akshay Kumar which was a success. His first 2007 release was the huge multi-starrer "Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love". Although a box office disappointment Govinda was praised for his performance.

His latest 2007 release is the David Dhawan directed romantic comedy "Partner", which co-stars Salman Khan. The film grossed Rs.300 Million in India on its opening week, the second highest domestic opening week gross for an Indian film.

Mithun Chakraborty

BIOGRAPHY :

He was born in Kolkata and educated at the Scottish Church College,Calcutta, from where he earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry (B.Sc).After that he attended and graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India. He started his film career at a late age of 29 in a Bengali film made by Mrinal Sen.It is a little known fact that Mithun was a staunch Naxalite before entering the film industry. But tragedy struck his family when his only brother got accidentally electrocuted and killed in a freak accident.Mithun returned to his family and left the Naxalite fold, even though doing so meant a grave risk to his own life from the Naxalites, because this was considered a one-way road (it was an unwritten law somewhat like an Omerta, that one could not abandon the Naxalite cause once it had been embraced). This proved to be a turning point in his life and became one of the prime causes that led to his iconic status.Another lesser known fact is that he had undergone expert training in martial arts.Mithun is married to Indian actress Yogita Bali and has six children, four sons and two daughters. The eldest son, Mimoh Chakraborty is an upcoming actor whose debut movie is scheduled to be launched in 2007.Numerous sources claim that Mithun Chakraborty had a relationship with actress Sridevi from 1986 to 1987, and that Sridevi ended the relationship when she found out that he had not divorced his first wife, Yogita Bali. Many versions of this story say that the couple was secretly married and the marriage was later annulled.
His first movie role was in the Bengali Mrinal Sen directed film Mrigaya in 1976 for which he won a National Film Award for Best Actor. He then had a few minor roles in Hindi films such as Do Anjaane (1976) and Phool Kile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (1978).He shot into national prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s with leading roles in many Hindi films such as Suraksha (1979) , Taarana (1979), Patita (1980), Hum Paanch (1980) and his breakthrough role finally came in the musical drama Disco Dancer in 1983 which was a huge success at the box office. This film and other films such as Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki (1984) and Dance Dance (1987) showcased him as a talented dancer.During the mid 1980s he was regarded as a rival to Amitabh Bachchan as the genre of films he did then showcased him as an angry young man at odds with the ills of society and corruption. This was the characterization of an image that made Amitabh Bachchan famous in the 1970s.Mithun achieved not only commercial success but also tremendous critical acclaim.
His performances in his first film Mrigaya as well as for films such as Tahader Katha and Ramakrishna, were widely appreciated. He received the coveted National Film Award for Best Actor for the three films. He also won the Filmfare Award for Jallad & Agneepath and has won many awards in India and abroad in the last 31 years.
During the mid 1990s he shifted his focus from the mainstream Hindi cinema and went into starring in his own low-budget B-grade movies. These movies were mainly produced to cater to the audiences of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, where Mithun has a cult-following even today, thanks to his Bhojpuri movies.
He made a comeback to the Bollywood mainstream film industry in 2005 with the film Elaan which was not successful. After a few supporting roles in films such as Lucky: No Time for Love and Dil Diya Hai he gave a critically acclaimed performance in Chingari which was however, not a commercial success. He returned to films shortly before his death in the 2003 Bollywood film "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S". In this film he shared the screen with son Sanjay for the first time although they had both appeared earlier in "Rocky" (1981) and "Kshatriya" (1993) but did not appear in any scenes together.

Raj Kapoor

BIOGRAPHY :

Raj Kapoor (December 14, 1924 - June 2, 1988) was a legendary Indian actor, producer and director of Bollywood movies. He is part of the famous Kapoor family and is the son of Prithviraj Kapoor, and Rama Kapoor, grandson of Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor, great-grandson of Dewan Keshavmal Kapoor.

The Kapoor family hailed from what is now Faisalabad (then called Lyallpur) in the Punjab province of present-day Pakistan. He was named Ranbirraj Kapoor at birth, and was the eldest of the four children of renowned stage and cinema actor Prithviraj Kapoor and his wife Smt. Ramsarni (Rama) Devi nee Mehra. His younger brothers were the actors Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. He also had a sister by name Urmila Sial.Raj Kapoor failed his matriculation examination.

In 1946, at the age of twenty-two, Raj Kapoor was wed to Krishna Malhotra belonging to Jabalpur in a traditional family-arranged wedding. Her brothers Premnath as well as Rajindernath were also actors.

Raj Kapoor and Krishna's eldest son Randhir Kapoor was born the following year, followed by their elder daughter Ritu the year after, in 1948. The second son Rishi Kapoor was born in 1952, and second daughter Reema in 1956. Their youngest son, Rajiv Kapoor was born in 1962.
Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor have all been associated with the Hindi film industry as actors, directors or producers.Noted film personalities Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor are the granddaughters of Raj and Krishna Kapoor, being the daughters of their eldest son Randhir Kapoor by his wife Babita.

Ruddy-cheeked and light-eyed, Raj Kapoor was unmistakably Destiny's blue-eyed boy. Raj Kapoor began his career as a clapper boy assisting Kidar Sharma. At age eleven, he appeared in films for the first time, in the 1935 film "Inquilab". Raj Kapoor's big break, however, came when he played the hero's role in "Neel Kamal" (1947) by Kidar Sharma opposite Madhubala.

In 1948, at the age of twenty-four,This boy wonder started multi-tasking and established his own studio, R. K. Films, and became the youngest film director of his time. He produced, directed and acted in "Aag" (1948).He had the unique ability to marshal talents like writer K A Abbas, lyricists Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, music maestros Shanker-Jaikishan, singer Mukesh and numerous actors and make them work at their optimum.. His first movie as a producer, director and star was "Aag" which was also the first of his many films with Nargis.

As a romantic actor, his onscreen romance with Nargis, fuelled by larger-than-life stories of their off-screen relationship, was a glorious chapter in the cinematic history of Hindi cinema.Raj Kapoor is known to have had a longtime romantic relationship with Nargis Dutt during the 1950s. The couple starred in several films together, including "Awaara" and "Shri 420".Nargis and he worked together in 16 films including 6 of his own productions.
But the roles Kapoor played best were those of a messiah of social change and of the impassioned advocate of universal love.

In 1949 he once again starred with Nargis alongside Dilip Kumar in Mehboob Khan's classic blockbuster "Andaz" which was his first major success as an actor.Raj Kapoor first showed his scene-stealing abilities in "Andaz" (1949), where he played Nargis's flamboyant but suspicious husband with aplomb.

He went on to produce, direct and star in many box office hits such as "Barsaat" (1949), "Awaara" (1951), "Shree 420" (1955)," Chori Chori "(1956), "Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai" (1960) and "Sangam" (1964).

Flamboyance was his forte in other early successes like "Dastaan" and "Sargam" as well.Kapoor was only 25 when his directorial venture "Barsaat" won him recognition as one who enjoyed a direct connection with the masses. Moreover, the self-obsessive pain of "Aag" paved the way for a more universal empathy evidenced in the way he captured mountain maid Nimmi's anguish in "Barsaat".

The actor-director enjoyed rare creative control of his image and his work. His next venture "Awaara" (1951) was a fascinating and psychologically adept look at a man caught in the centre of a nature-versus-nurture debate.
His knack for romance is revealed in the famous sequence where an angry Kapoor slaps Nargis after she calls him awaara. He is angry at her for being so attractive and assured, at himself for not quite being able to come to terms with his feelings of inadequacy prompted by his dubious background, at his libido for wanting her and at his ego for living in constant dread of a probable rejection.Awaara, when released in Russia as Brodigaya, achieved unprecedented success and the song Awaara hoon became a Russian favourite.

Kapoor's RK banner flew high with "Shri 420" (1955), the story of a hobo (Kapoor) caught between material aspirations (as represented by the sharp Nadira) and the higher self (as represented by schoolteacher Nargis). The tramp of "Shri 420", who doffed his battered bowler hat to Chaplin, touched a universal nerve. The popularity of this tramp with a golden heart grew to gargantuan dimensions after Kapoor portrayed almost saintly extensions in "Anadi" (1959) and "Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai" (1960); and, later, in "Deewana" (1967), "Sapnon Ka Saudagar" (1968) and "Mera Naam Joker"(1970).

Kapoor's Sangam (1964) saw a love triangle centering around a man (Kapoor), his wife (Vyjayanthimala) and their best friend (Rajendra Kumar). His ability to see and empathise with each character's emotional viewpoint spoke volumes about his sensitivity as a director. Sangam's thunderous success triggered off a vogue for foreign locales (Love In Tokyo, An Evening In Paris) in Hindi films.

After Sangam, a now-rotund and 40-plus Kapoor looked lacklustre in films like Around The World opposite much younger heroines like Rajshri and Hema Malini. But the actor was too obsessed with his pet project, Mera Naam Joker to realise he should be eating and drinking less.

In the 1970 his ambitious project "Mera Naam Joker" was released, which took more than six years to complete and was a box office failure putting him into a financial crisis. Despite this setback, the film was much later acknowledged as a misunderstood classic and Raj himself regarded this film as his favourite.

Any other man would have lost heart after such a debacle, but not Kapoor. He later bounced back when he produced and co-starred with his eldest son Randhir Kapoor in Randhir's acting and directorial debut "Kal Aaj Aur Kal" (1971) which was an average success at the box office. "Kal Aaj Aur Kal" was also notable for the last film appearance of Raj's father Prithviraj Kapoor.

Despite creditors beating at his door due to his financial crisis post "Mera Naam Joker", he refused to keep the lid on production expenses and defiantly made "Bobby" (1973) with two newcomers, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.
Raj Kapoor launched the career of his second son Rishi Kapoor with this movie along side Dimple Kapadiya." Bobby" was not only a huge box office success but also introduced actress Dimple Kapadia, later a very popular actress, and was the first of a new generation of teen romances. Dimple wore bikinis in the film which was quite unique for Indian films then.
Even if one is not predisposed towards young love stories, one enjoys Bobby for the sheer beauty of its visuals, the exuberance of youth and Kapoor's ability to transcend the generation gap when communicating to his audience.

In the latter half of the 1970s and early 1980s Raj acted in fewer films and focused more on producing and directing films which focused on the female protognists in "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" (1978), "Prem Rog" (1982) and "Ram Teri Ganga Maili"(1985) all of which did well at the box office.

Bobby's stellar success was not duplicated by Kapoor's next, Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978). Kapoor valiantly attempted to recycle Aag and convince us that, in love, a beautiful soul is of paramount importance. But his camera's predilection for heroine Zeenat Aman's curves told another story.

Raj Kapoor's sensitivity towards his female protagonists found more favour in "Prem Rog" (1982), a film about widow remarriage, and "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" (1985), where he employed a woman as a metaphor for a once pure, but now defiled, country. At 60, he had lost none of his ability to push the audience's emotional throttle."Ram Teri Ganga Maili" revived the career of his youngest son Rajeev Kapoor for a short phase.

He gave Bollywood several great actors like Nimmi, Dimple Kapadia, and Mandakini, as well as launching and reviving the careers of his sons Rishi and Rajiv.

Raj Kapoor is appreciated both by film critics and ordinary film fans. Film historians and movie buffs speak of him as the "Charlie Chaplin of Indian cinema," since he often portrayed a tramp-like figure, who, despite adversity, was still cheerful and honest. His fame spread world-wide. He was adored by audiences in large parts of Africa, the Middle East, the former Soviet Union, China, and Southeast Asia; his movies were global commercial successes.

Many of Raj Kapoor's movies had a patriotic theme. His films "Aag", "Shri 420" and "Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai" celebrated the newly independent India, and encouraged film-goers to be patriots.

The song " Mera Joota Hain Japani" from the movie "Shri 420" is still extremely popular and has been featured in a number of movies since Shri 420. Indian author Mahasweta Devi stopped the show with her inaugural speech at the 2006 Frankfurt Book Fair when she used these lyrics to express her own heartfelt patriotism and debt to her country.

Raj Kapoor was a canny judge of filmi music and lyrics. Many of the songs he commissioned are evergreen hits. Mukesh was Raj Kapoor's singing voice in almost all of his films.

He introduced the music directors Shankar-Jaikishan and the lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri. Shankar Jaikishan were his music director of choice. He worked with them in 20 films in all including 10 of his own films from Barsaat till Kal Aaj Aur Kal.
One of the featured players on the records was Faizullah Abdul Rahim Taghioff who played mandolin in such hit movies as Barsaat, Awara, Aan, Aag. (Jagte Raho with Salil Choudhury and Ab Dilli Dur Nahin being two exceptions in this period). Only with Bobby did he turn to Laxmikant Pyarelal.
He is also remembered for his strong sense of visual style. He used striking visual compositions, elaborate sets, and dramatic lighting to complete the mood set by the music.

Raj Kapoor's last film appearance was in "Vakil Babu" (1982). His last ever acting role was a minor role in a 1984 British made-for-television film tited "Kim".

Raj Kapoor suffered from asthma in his later years; he died of complications related to asthma in 1988 at sixty-three years of age.

At the time of his death he was working on the movie Henna (an Indo-Pakistani love story). The script of Henna was ready but Kapoor was not there to direct it. In keeping with the theme of his life (as articulated emphatically in Mera Naam Joker) -- the show must go on -- his eldest son Randhir directed Heena for the RK banner. The film was a spectacular success. The showman could not have asked for a better tribute.

Kamal Hassan

BIOGRAPHY :

Kamal Haasan (born on November 7, 1954) is a four time National Film Award winning Indian film actor.

Kamal is the youngest of four children born in to an Iyengar family to Rajalakshmi and Srinivasan. His father, an attorney by profession, gave all his sons (Charu Haasan, Chandra Haasan, Kamal Haasan) the suffix of "Haasan" as a sign of his friendship to one Mr. Haasan. Kamal is also a playback singer and sometimes pens the lyrics for the soundtracks of some of his recent films. He is an able performer of the Bharatanatyam dance form. He had assisted in choreography early in his career. He is multilingual.

He began his career as a child artist in many films, while also attending a theatre for stage plays. Kamal Haasan gained the Indian cinema's attention in his first blockbuster, "Kalathur Kannamma" (1960) and since then he has acted in over two hundred Indian films.

He is the only actor other than Mammooty who received three National film awards for Best Actor. Moreover, Kamal Haasan also received a National award for best performance as a child artist. Kamal Haasan along with Mammootty, Anil Kapoor, Om Puri, and Naseruddin Shah are called the Famous Five of Indian Cinema.

Kamal Hassan has received India's fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri for his services to Indian cinema in 1990. Kamal Haasan performs predominantly in leading roles in high-budget and major studio films, ranging from romantic comedies and drama to action thrillers. His most popular films include "Moondram Pirai" (1982), "Saagara Sangamam" (1983), "Nayagan" (1987), "Indian" (1996) and "Hey Ram" (2000). In his currently unreleased film "Dasavatharam", he has attempted to portray ten different characters.

In the 1960s, Kamal made his screen debut with "Kalathur Kannamma" produced by AVM production at the age of six and it won him the first National Award for Best Child Artist. He followed it with appearances as a child actor in movies that featured MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Nagesh and Gemini Ganesh.

As an actor in adult roles, he received a lukewarm response for his initial few films like "Avargal", "Aval Oru Thodarkathai", "Solla Thaan Ninaikkiren", "Maanavan" and "Kumara Vijayam".

His first highly popular movie was "16 Vayathinile" with Sridevi. This established him as a popular teen idol at the age of 23. Kamal Haasan and Sri Devi were a popular acting pair and have acted together in 23 films. The year following his appearance in "16 Vayathinile", Kamal Haasan acted in director K. Balachander's Telugu hit "Maro Charithra".In many of his late 1970s films, he was usually the hero, with Rajinikanth as the villain.

During the 1970s, he has played a host of characters that include-a ventriloquist in Avargal (He actually learnt ventriquilism for his role in the movie),a village innocent in "16 Vayathinile",a disco jockey in "Ilamai Oonjaladugiradhu",a psychopath serial killer of women in "Sigappu Rojakkal",a buck-toothed villager in "Kalyanaraman",Aladdin in "Alavudheenum Arpudha Vilakkum".

His first attempt at direction came through an unfortunate turn of events with the demise of director T.N. Baalu during the filming of "Sankarlal" in 1981. Kamal reached stardom in 1979 with multiple classics and mass blockbusters which coincided with the decline of MGR/ Sivaji era in movies (MGR quit movies in 1977 while Sivaji, nevertheless continued to act till the 90s). A huge factor behind Kamal's success is his versatility.

In the 80s, he has played amongst other roles, :a blind violinist in "Raja Paarvai" at the age of 27 (first screenplay by Kamal), a classical dancer in "Saagara Sangamam",a mentally challenged man who falls in love in "Swathi Muthyam",an undercover cop in "Kaaki Sattai",a benevolent underworld don in "Nayagan" (Leader) at the age of 33 (directed by Mani Ratnam), an unemployed youth who chances upon a week of opulence in the silent movie "Pushpak", an honest cop, a dwarf circus clown and a fun-loving mechanic in "Apoorva Sagodharargal"at the age of 35 (screenplay by Kamal),a corrupt mayor in Indrudu Chandrudu, a spy in "Vikram", an illiterate villager in "Sakalakala Vallavan"
Apoorva Sagodharargal, which released in 1989, was the first Kamal film to gross almost Rs.25 million at the box office.

In the 1990s Kamal's second attempt at direction came through another unfortunate turn of events when the original director Shantanu Sheroey failed to do a good job while filming "Chachi 420" in 1997. Inspired by the European style of closer-to-reality docu-dramas, Kamal moved decisively towards making films for select classes in the 90s, isolating some of his ardent fans.

In this period, he has played as a Doctor in the Tamil comedy movie "Sathy Leelavathy", as quadruplets in the comedy "Michael Madhana Kamarajan",as an old and highly-corrupt mayor in "Indiran Chandiran", a mentally-challenged man in the very dark film "Guna",a modern youth-turned-villager in "Thevar Magan" at the age of 38 (written and produced by Kamal), a hapless familyman who lost and re-discovers his family in a metropolis in "Mahanadhi", a revolutionary lecturer in "Nammavar",a special police squad officer against terrorism in "Kuruthipunal",a righteous old revolutionary as well as his corrupt son in "Indian", an old nanny in "Avvai Shanmugi" at the age of 42.

Unlike the eighties, Kamal films in the nineties lost sheen and were unsuccessful, barring "Thevar Magan", "Michael Madhana Kamarajan", "Avvai Shanmugi" and "Indian". "Indian" directed by Shankar which released in 1996 , grossed almost Rs.100 million at the box office marking a new peak in his career.

Kamal continues scripting directing and acting in his productions, and has met with considerable success at the box office.Again, he has played diverse roles in this period, which include: a Hindu fundamentalist in "Hey Ram",a mentally affected Sri Lankan Tamil in the comedy "Thenali",a pair of twins (one of which is a deranged psychopath) in "Aalavandhan",an ardent bachelor-stuntmaster-turned-lover in "Pammal K. Sambandam",a randy pilot in the comedy caper "Panchathantiram",a disabled altruist (Communist) in "Anbe Sivam",a rustic wrongly jailed for the murder of his lover in "Virumaandi" (directed by Kamal),a deaf circus stuntman in "Mumbai Express" at the age of 51,an affable mafiaman enrolled in medical school," Vasool Raja MBBS" a remake of Hindi film, Munna Bai M.B.B.S,as DCP Raghavan, a smart and suave policeman with his "Raghavan instinct" out to trace a serial psychopath killer duo in "Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu".
"Thenali" which released in 2000, was the first Kamal film to gross almost Rs.100 million at the box office. "Vasool Raja MBBS" and "Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu" mopped up over Rs.150 million and Rs.300 million each at the box office.

Kamal has an uncanny ability to remake Hollywood movies in Tamil. His remakes are not lift-offs. His remakes are usually inspired by Hollywood originals, but the story and screenplay are customized for Indian Audiences. The central plot/theme of the movie is from the Hollywood original, "Nayagan" was inspired by Godfather. "Avvai Shanmugi" and "Chachi 420" were inspired by "Mrs. Doubtfire". "Anbe Sivam" was inspired by "Planes, Trains & Automobiles". "Sathi Leelavathi" was inspired by "She-Devil" (film) and "Magalir Mattum" was inspired by "Nine to Five".

Kamal is a three-time winner of the National Film Award for Best Actor for the films "Nayagan", "Moondram Pirai" and "Indian". He also won the national award for Best Child Actor for his performance in "Kalathur Kannamma". He has also received the best actor award at the Asian Film festivals held in 1983 and 1985 for "Saagara Sangamam" and "Swathi Muthyam" respectively.

Six of his movies have been sent as India's official entry to the Oscars- The only actor to achieve this feat in the sub-continent. Kamal has won the Filmfare awards 18 times. In fact, he wrote to the FILMFARE committee not to give him any more awards and that be used to encourage the upcoming and promising young actors.

He was awarded the fourth highest recognition given to Indian civilians - the Padmashri in 1990. He was conferred an honorary doctorate by Sathyabama University, Chennai in 2005. Kamal Haasan has won a total of 172 awards which is more than any other actor in the world living or dead. He was named as "kalaignani" - an idol of art, by M. Karunanidhi for his classical work towards Tamil cinema. In his upcoming film Dasavatharam, he plays 10 different roles, an act which is the second of its kind in the world, after the Tamil movie Navarathri (1936).

Kamal was also conferred with a very unique honour this year(2007) as "Living Legend" in the film business by FICCI,India.

Kamal started his foray into film production with 'Raaja Paarvai' in 1981. The film was a commercial failure, though critically well received. A more recent production was the film "Virumaandi" in 2004. His privately held production house Raj Kamal Films produced several classics like "Apoorva Sagodharargal"," Thevar Magan", "Kuruthipunal" etc. His more recent production ventures include the films "Virumaandi" and "Mumbai Xpress".

His magnum opus, "Marudha Naayagam", is a period film set in early 18th century Madurai about a warrior/freedom fighter Yusuf Khan Sahib or Muhammed Yusuf Khan. The film's launch was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II. However, the film is still under production or shelved due to many reasons.

In 2005, he launched a new business unit called Raj Kamal Audio in a drive to corporatise all his film commitments. In 2006, he purchased prime real estate for a state-of-the-art multiplex cinema.

Jeetendra

Jeetendra aka Jeetender (born April 7, 1942) is a popular Indian actor.Born Ravi Kapoor in Mumbai, India, he started in Bollywood in the late 1950s when filmmaker V. Shantaram gave him a chance as Sandhya's double in "Navrang" (1959).

The acting, fighting, singing, dancing Hindi film hero is the sum of many parts. Jeetendra may not have won the critics, but he managed to be a producers' pet for 25 years thanks to his indisputable commercial appeal.

Jeetendra has done nearly 200 films as hero, a feat matched by just a handful of his peers since the inception of Hindi cinema. He has repeatedly costarred with the biggest heroines of his time like Rekha (24 films), Hema Malini (12 films), Sridevi (14 films) and Jaya Prada (21 films).

In the late 1950s, Ravi Kapoor (Jeetendra is his screen name) was a science student who loved combing the back roads of Girgaum (in south Mumbai) with his friends.Occasionally, he would visit film studios to supply imitation jewellery his family dealt in. Filmmaker V Shantaram gave the slim youngster a chance as Sandhya's double in "Navrang" (1959) and "Sehra" (1963). He was irretrievably bitten by the glamour bug.

Jeetendra got his first major break when Shantaram cast him as hero in "Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne" (1964). But the actor 'cuckoo'ed into the spotlight with "Farz" (1967). Jeetendra held the audience's interest at gunpoint when he pranced with Aruna Irani, even dragging her between his legs in the runaway hit "Mast baharon ka main aashiq... cuckoo". Farz, a slow starter, went on to become a golden jubilee success. The actor introduced a new, brasher hero, in keeping with the times. His films consistently achieved commercial success, even though the critics panned a lot of them.

Since dress designers were a rare breed those days, Jeetendra picked up a tee shirt from a retail shop and wore white shoes from his personal collection for the Cuckoo number. It became his signature. His vigorous dancing in "Farz" and subsequent films like "Caravan" and "Humjoli" won Jeetendra the epithet, "Jumping Jack".

Jeetendra, who had started life in a chawl, moved into a palatial house in Colaba in south Mumbai. His thrilled mother, surprised by the huge hall of her new flat, had said, 'One can play football here.'Jeetendra's immense popularity can be attributed to the fact that he unabashedly catered to the masses in films like "Jigri Dost", "Humjoli" and "Caravan". He was at home in these roles.

After all, when he eve-teased the pert heroine on screen, he was only extending his off-screen persona -- while wooing Shobha (his wife), Jeetendra pelted her with peanuts. His energetic outbursts suffered a temporary setback in the early 1970s when his childhood friend Rajesh Khanna became a superstar. Like Khanna, Jeetendra too aimed at respectability and yearned to do an "Anand".

He dabbled with bespectacled histrionics in his trilogy with Gulzar "Parichay", "Khushboo" and "Kinara".He displayed a fair amount of sensitivity in these films, but increasingly veered toward commercially safer melodramas in the late 1970s and early 1980s (Apnapan, Judaai, Asha, Pyaasa Sawan, Maang Bharo Sajna, Ek Hi Bhool). Jeetendra attributed his sudden spurt in popularity to the middle class values of most of his characters, which was something he too could identify with.

Simultaneously, if the trend was action, Jeetendra adapted to it with films like "Dil Aur Deewar", "Jyoti Bane Jwala" and "Meri Awaaz Suno".At this juncture, his dream project, "Deedar-e-Yaar" (1982), a wannabe "Mere Mehboob", rudely disturbed the star's upward trajectory. This home production, costarring Tina Munim and Rishi Kapoor, was a box-office washout.

Within months, the Jumping Jack bounced back. The stupendous success of his Chennai films "Himmatwala", "Justice Chowdhary", "Mawaali" and "Tohfa" in the 1983-1984 phase made Jeetendra's success assume humungous proportions. He had found a dazzling co-star in Sridevi. Critics panned the colourful 'pots-n-pans' potboilers, but the masses thronged to see Jeetendra doing a "Bak bak mat kar" and "Ice cream khaoge" with Sridevi, who was half his age but had as much sizzle. These movies featured dance sequences with colorful clay pots, dozens of extras, electronic music by Bappi Lahiri, and lyrics by Indeewar

Touted as a competitor to Amitabh Bachchan, the level-headed Jeetendra sagaciously shrugged away the compliments with, "Amitabh is No1 to No 10.The southern invasion, led by K Raghavendra Rao and K Bapaiah, marked the high point of Jeetendra's decades-long association with south-based filmmakers. Jeetendra struck gold with the Raveekant Nagaich-directed "Farz" and continued to mint money with the legendary L V Prasad's "Jeene Ki Raah" (a drama centring around a harried-married man's involvement with a cripple, played by Tanuja) and "Bidaai"(a kerchief-soaker about a dutiful son who tames his shrewish wife, played by Leena).

T Rama Rao too gave a hat-trick of hits with Jeetendra and Rekha in 1980-1981: "Judaai", "Maang Bharo Sajna" and "Ek Hi Bhool".But, by the late 1980s, a 40-plus Jeetendra was finding it difficult to stay in the rat race despite his commendable efforts to stay fit. The star turned serious and made determined last-ditch efforts at histrionics in films like "New Delhi Times" (1985), "Santaan "(1993) and "Udhaar Ka Zindagi" (1995) but, unfortunately, they failed at the box-office.

Today, Jeetendra takes pride in his children -- Ekta Kapoor, a film producer who runs Balaji Telefilms, India's number one television production house, and, Tusshar, a budding actor. They make popular TV serials in Hindi, Tamil, and other languages. They have also produced five Bollywood films, two of which have Tusshar in the leading role. Jeetendra was last seen in a cameo in his home-production, "Kucch To Hai". Jeetendra made a brief appearance in one of his daughter's produced films Kucch To Hai (2002) where he appeared alongside his son Tusshar. He recently made an appearance in a popular TV serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi as an old man.

Shammi Kapoor

Name: Shammi Kapoor
Birthday: Wednesday, October 21, 1931
Star Sign : Libra
First Film : Dil Deke Dekho

Biography
Shammi Kapoor (born October 21, 1931) is an actor in Hindi films. Most of his successful films were in the late 1950s and 1960s.

He was born Shamsher Raj Kapoor in Mumbai to film and theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor. Shammi was the second of three sons born to Prithviraj (the other two being Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor), all of whom were, like their father, successful Bollywood actors.

He acted in many fun and boisterous films; he is often considered the Indian Elvis Presley. He particularly used Mohammed Rafi as his playback voice and Rafi was also his friend. In fact, it was Rafi who shouted the song "Yahoo" and famously picturized on Shammi in the huge hit film Junglee (1961). He won the Filmfare award as Best Actor for Brahmachari (1968). Producers loved pairing Shammi with new heroines, but only three became huge stars: Asha Parekh, Saira Banu, and Sharmila Tagore. He and Asha Parekh were paired together in four films, the most successful being the murder mystery Teesri Manzil (1966). However, tragedy struck during the filming of Teesri Manzil (1966), when Shammi's first wife, actress Geeta Bali, died of small pox, leaving him with two small children. It led to a failed romance with Mumtaz, his co-star from Brahmachari (1968). In 1969, he married his second wife Neela, and his significant weight gain ended his career as a romantic hero in the early 1970's, with Andaz (1971) being one of his last hits. He turned supporting actor, playing Saira Banu's father in Zameer (1975), when he had been her leading man a decade earlier in Junglee (1961) and Bluff Master (1964). He also directed Manoranjan (1974) and Bandalbaaz (1976), but neither were successful. He won his second Filmfare award, this time as Best Supporting Actor for Vidhaata (1982). He also won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.

Shammi Kapoor was also one of the foremost internet users in India. He is the founder and chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI) and has been instrumental in setting up internet organizations like the Ethical Hackers Association
